A verified breakdown of Ether.fi Cash cashback, progressive spending bands, ETHFI settlement, exclusions and Category Cashback caps.

Verified brief3 primary sources reviewed

What matters most

  • The 3% headline applies only inside the first monthly band: Core, Luxe and Pinnacle have different limits, and EUR purchases use lower thresholds.
  • Cashback is converted into ETHFI after settlement, locked for seven days and claimable only once at least $5 has accumulated.
  • The 10–30% Category Cashback is limited to named subscriptions in one selected category and capped at $10–$30 per month.

The everyday cashback ladder

Ether.fi applies cashback progressively across monthly spending bands. Core currently earns 3% on the first $2,000 of standard-currency spend, then 1% from $2,001 to $3,000 and 0.5% above $3,000. Luxe extends those bands to $10,000 and $20,000, while Pinnacle extends them to $50,000 and $80,000.

EUR purchases have lower thresholds. Core receives 3% on the first $800 of USD-equivalent EUR spend, Luxe on the first $3,000 and Pinnacle on the first $16,000. USD and EUR spending share one counter, so these are not two independent allowances. The rate applied to each transaction depends on its currency and where the shared monthly counter has reached.

How cashback becomes ETHFI

Eligible cashback is calculated in dollar terms while a card transaction is pending. When the purchase clears, the reward is converted into ETHFI at the then-current price and enters a seven-day lock. It becomes claimable after that lock, and at least $5 of claimable cashback is required before it can be moved into the account asset balance.

This creates price exposure between earning and eventual use. A 3% reward describes the dollar value at conversion, not a guaranteed future value after ETHFI moves. Refunds and reversals can also reverse the associated reward.

Purchases that do not earn cashback

The official rules exclude ATM withdrawals, cash advances, peer-to-peer transfers, currency exchange, tax payments, gift cards, money orders and transactions that function as cash substitutes. Listed ineligible merchant categories also include investment platforms, brokers, real-estate managers, account funding and gambling.

Merchant category coding matters more than the product name a customer sees. A legitimate purchase can still receive no cashback if the merchant or payment intermediary uses an excluded code. Build expected value from ordinary eligible retail spending rather than assuming every card charge qualifies.

What the 10%, 20% and 30% rates really cover

Category Cashback is a separate membership benefit for named subscription services. Luxe publishes 10% up to $10 per month, Pinnacle 20% up to $20 and VIP 30% up to $30. Core does not currently receive this benefit.

Members select one category and can change it every 30 days. The category is a curated list of brands, not a blanket merchant type: the Food category can include an Uber One or DashPass subscription, but it does not make normal restaurant spending eligible. App-store billing and bundled subscriptions are excluded from the category boost.

How to calculate the reward's real value

Start with eligible monthly spend inside each applicable band, then subtract FX, conversion, membership and borrowing costs. Use the category bonus only for subscriptions that appear on the current eligible-service list and stop it at the published monthly cap.

Finally, value ETHFI conservatively until it can be claimed. If the result only looks attractive when every purchase qualifies, the token price stays flat and the highest rate applies to all spending, the estimate is too optimistic.
