Ether.fi Cash card: how it works, fees and risks to check

A practical guide to Ether.fi Cash, its 3% cashback, Membership points, category rewards, spending modes, fees and risks.

Verified brief5 primary sources reviewed

What matters most

  • Core, Luxe and Pinnacle currently publish 3% cashback within tier-specific first spending bands; VIP publishes 4%.
  • The 10%, 20% and 30% Category Cashback rates apply only to named subscriptions and have monthly caps.
  • Membership points reset monthly, so tier qualification and the economics of borrowing against collateral must be assessed separately.

How the Ether.fi Cash card works

Ether.fi presents Cash as part of a broader account for holding, earning, borrowing, spending, trading and sending. Its official product page says users can top up the card with supported assets and use either a virtual or physical card, subject to regional availability and eligibility checks.

The important distinction is how a purchase is funded. Spending assets directly and borrowing against a portfolio create different costs and risks. Before using the card, identify which mode will be used, what asset settles the transaction and whether a conversion or borrowing position is created.

Spending versus borrowing against assets

Ether.fi says users may access cash by borrowing against assets rather than selling them. This can preserve market exposure, but it also introduces collateral and liquidation risk. If the collateral falls in value, the cost of maintaining the position can become more important than any card reward.

Check the applicable loan-to-value limits, interest or borrowing rate, liquidation process and repayment mechanics in the live terms. A card purchase can feel simple at checkout while the financing behind it remains complex.

The 3% everyday cashback

Ether.fi currently publishes 3% cashback on eligible card spending inside the first monthly band for Core, Luxe and Pinnacle members. The published standard-currency bands are the first $2,000 for Core, $10,000 for Luxe and $50,000 for Pinnacle; EUR uses lower currency-specific thresholds. VIP publishes 4% on its first $50,000 of eligible monthly spend.

The rate steps down progressively after the first band. Cashback is paid in ETHFI after settlement, has a seven-day lock and requires at least $5 to claim. ATM withdrawals, transfers, financial services, crypto purchases, gambling and other excluded merchant categories do not qualify.

How Membership points unlock higher levels

Everyone begins at Core. Ether.fi's current Membership guide says Luxe requires 5,000 points to activate and 5,000 points per month to maintain, while Pinnacle requires 25,000 points. Membership points reset at the start of each calendar month rather than accumulating indefinitely.

Eligible Cash spending currently earns 1,000 Membership points per $1,000 spent. The published table also lists daily points for eligible Stake, Liquid and staked ETHFI balances, while trading and borrowing can earn points under the current in-app rules. Ether.fi also offers alternative qualifying routes through eligible balances, staked ETHFI or an annual Membership purchase when available. Check the app because availability and prices can change.

Where the 10%, 20% and 30% rewards apply

Higher percentages apply to Category Cashback, not to every card purchase. Members choose one category of named subscription services and can change it every 30 days. Luxe currently publishes 10% up to $10 per month, Pinnacle 20% up to $20 per month and VIP 30% up to $30 per month.

Eligible services include selected AI, productivity, streaming, security, travel and membership subscriptions, with the precise list depending on the tier. A restaurant purchase does not qualify merely because the selected category is Food, and subscriptions billed through an app store do not earn the category boost. Once the monthly category cap is reached, further eligible purchases receive only the applicable base cashback.

Separate travel benefits should not be mixed into the everyday rate. Ether.fi currently advertises 5% cashback on hotels booked through Ether.fi Travel, up to 65% off certain hotel and flight rates, and 25% airport fast-track cashback for Pinnacle and VIP within annual caps. These are distinct benefits with their own eligibility rules.

What to verify before applying

Confirm availability in your country, the identity of the card issuer, supported funding assets, card-network terms and whether the product is debit, credit or collateral-backed in the mode you intend to use.

Then compare the complete annual cost with a conventional card and with other crypto cards. Product terms can change, so use this guide as a framework and verify the current documentation before acting.

Frequently asked questions

Is Ether.fi Cash a debit or credit card?

Its funding structure can vary by mode and market. Check the live product and issuer terms for your account before treating it as a conventional debit or credit card.

Can I spend crypto without selling it?

Ether.fi describes a borrowing route that may preserve exposure by using assets as collateral. That introduces borrowing and liquidation risk.

Are Ether.fi Cash rewards guaranteed?

No. Rewards depend on membership, eligibility, transaction type and the current reward terms.

Does Ether.fi Cash give 3% cashback?

Yes, on eligible spending inside the first monthly band for Core, Luxe and Pinnacle. Currency-specific thresholds, exclusions and lower rates after the first band apply; VIP currently publishes 4%.

Can Ether.fi cashback reach 30% or 40%?

The official Membership terms currently publish Category Cashback of up to 30% for VIP on named subscription services, capped at $30 per month. They do not support describing ordinary card spending as 30–40% cashback.

Do Membership points accumulate forever?

No. Membership points reset each calendar month. Current thresholds and alternative qualification routes should be checked in the app.
